  • My father was a Customs Officer, on the Republic of Ireland side of the border, working for the Revenue Commissioners. All motor vehicles required a pass book which was stamped every time the vehicle crossed the land boundary between North and South. In fact that surveillance was in place 24 hours a day. This meant that vehicles crossing to or from Northern Ireland after the normal closing hour of midnight had to book a request. Dance bands in particular often kept my father and other officers (when they were on late shift) at work into the early hours of the morning.
