  • The road at Ravella was blown up in several places but the bridge remained in tact.

  • There was a large crater in the road on the southern side of the border, about a mile from the bridge. It was also cratered on the northern side, just after the bridge.

  • The bridge was left unharmed – local people believe that the British Army thought the stone bridge was too nice to topple.

  • People crossed the River Blackwater, via the Stepping Stones, when smuggling goods from Aughnacloy. People from the south used this road coming from Aughnacloy to avoid the customs.
