The road at Ravella was blown up in several places but the bridge remained in tact.
There was a large crater in the road on the southern side of the border, about a mile from the bridge. It was also cratered on the northern side, just after the bridge.
The bridge was left unharmed – local people believe that the British Army thought the stone bridge was too nice to topple.
People crossed the River Blackwater, via the Stepping Stones, when smuggling goods from Aughnacloy. People from the south used this road coming from Aughnacloy to avoid the customs.
