The crossing was spiked originally in the late 1950s.
The road was blown up twice by the British Army.
The crossing does not follow its original path anymore. It was changed in the early 1980s for road safety reasons and to allow a local farmer to bring cattle across the road safely.
A British soldier was killed in a field that overlooked the crossing on the northern side after he had triggered three land mines in January 1971.
