The road was spiked in 1956-57 then blew up in the early 1970s and was never filled in by locals.
Farmers built a bridge in an adjacent field to bypass the crater.
When the road was cratered, large rocks from the explosions landed in the farmers’ fields. The farmers applied for compensation and were awarded money for the damage done to their land.
A second crater was blown further up the road and it was so big “you could put a dwelling house in it”.
