There was a Shebeen on the corner of this crossing called "The Spike Hotel". The front door was in Northern Ireland and the back door was in the Republic of Ireland.
The road was not spiked or blocked at the border. It was spiked further up the Ballynamona Road, the spikes were removed in the early 70s and not replaced.
Peter Cleary a member of the Provisional IRA was killed by the SAS close to the crossing on the 15th April 1976. He was the first person to be shot and killed by the SAS during the troubles.
